DART Buses Go to the Dogs, Thanks to Local Couple

Dallas, TX, May 13, 2008 - If photographer Joe Grisham and his wife, art director Janet Healey, have their way, a lot of Dallas residents will find their best friends on the bus this summer.

Starting May 5th, 55 DART buses will carry outdoor banners urging pet lovers to adopt animals now housed at the SPCA of Texas.

The “Find Your Best Friend” ads feature warm and inviting photographs of people and their dogs created by Healey and Grisham and designed by Todd Hart, Creative Director of Focus 2, a Dallas brand development firm.

The bus campaign covers Addison, Carrollton, Cockrell Hill, Dallas, Farmers Branch, Garland, Glenn Heights, Highland Park, Irving, Plano, Richardson, Rowlett and University Park, and will run through the middle of July.

Unlike many public service campaigns which are underwritten by a sponsoring agency, this project was funded entirely with private donations spearheaded by Grisham and Healey.

When the couple finished the project for the SPCA of Texas, the organization cited a lack of funds, so the duo decided to take on the entire job themselves. The pair spent almost two years raising the funds to produce the banners and buy the ad space.

“We could not have done this job without the support and encouragement of our good friend, Mary Spencer, a member of SPCA of Texas’ Board of Directors,” Mr. Grisham says. “Our goal is to get as many animals adopted as possible this summer.”

“Finding homes for animals and keeping animals in homes is of the utmost importance to us,” said James Bias, SPCA of Texas president.

The plight of animals in crisis has long been a passion of Healey and Grisham, whose Dallas-based commercial photography business creates beautiful images for advertising and catalog clients.

In 2007, the pair launched “Hooray for the Underdog,” a stationery collection of note cards, calendars, silver gelatin prints, journals and notepads featuring rescued dogs and cats. Along with the photograph of each “underdog” is a brief description including the animal’s name, their profile and their special power.

The products, which also include hand-made dog tags and T-shirts, are available at www.hoorayfortheunderdog.com, through select stationery stores and in many pet stores and boutiques around the world.

In 2006, Healey and Grisham teamed with Dallas Animal Services to promote the free DAS Spay and Neuter program. Their current work on behalf of the SPCA of Texas is an outgrowth of that campaign.

“We want these animals off the streets, out of the shelters and into loving homes,” says Janet Healey, who notes that all of their dogs, including their current two, were rescued.

“What most people want in life is to be loved, and when you adopt a dog or a cat from a shelter, you’ll get absolute, unconditional love. Take them home, take care of them and they’ll love you with everything they’ve got. You just can’t beat that.”
